All women love them. Others are even collecting different colors of pearls to match their attire. From small to larger size of, they are all precious. They exude timeless elegance and sophistication.  A woman who wears pearl jewelry looks more attractive and glimmering white pearls are just so perfect to wear. White pearls are oftentimes compared to purity because of its flawless whiteness.

The idea that cultured pearl is an artificial or fake is false. Do you really know what cultured pearl is? You would have bought this for yourself or for your mom or friends as a gift.

A cultured pearl is something that has an intervention of humans. Farmers intentionally insert an organic matter or an irritant in the crack of the oyster or mollusk and the pearl that is formed is called cultured. Natural pearls on the other hand are a pure product of nature. When an organic matter is implanted in an oyster naturally, the pearl that is formed is called natural because they formed without human aid. The rest of the process for natural and cultured is the same. The only difference is the implanting an irritant into the oyster.

All these cultured pearls grow on pearl farms. It is where they graft the mollusks and produce them. Whether natural or cultured pearls, its size depends on the length of time it remains in the oyster. The larger the size, the better and the rounder the more expensive is the pearl. Cultured pearls nowadays make up almost 100% of the global industry. It is valuable and the beauty it creates is timeless. Natural pearls are rare and take too much time to wait for it to occur naturally.

For most people, they only know white as the original color. However, do you know that there are various colors of too? Aside from the famous white pearls, you can find black, yellow, cream, green, rose, gray and blue. The color of the pearl also depends of the color of the oyster. Black lipped oysters in the Polynesian island produced black Tahitian pearls, which are very valuable. There are gold and silver-lipped oysters too.

The price of depends on the shape, size, color and luster. High quality pearls appraised should be blemish-free, bright and clean surface. It should have high luster and be round without any dents and free of marks.

There are two common types of cultured pearls, the saltwater and the freshwater variety. Saltwater types are grown in ocean coastal waters mainly in Japan, China and in the U.S. They tend to be more lustrous and high class compared to their freshwater counterparts.

Freshwater pearls grow in mollusks that live in fresh waters like lakes and rivers. They are relatively affordable yet chic compared to their saltwater cousins. However, both freshwater and saltwater cultured project class and sophistication. They may not be as durable like gemstones but they are beautiful and valuable. They need to be handled with proper care and stored in a soft cloth. They should be kept away from dryness and humidity. They should be put in a compartmentalized box to keep away from contacting other jewelries.

But they should not be stored for a long period of time because it may cause damage and dehydrate the pearls. If you own pearl jewelry is it recommended to wear your pearls after you dress up. It is also recommended to wear it as often as you like to keep the luster of the pearls.  Pearls are organic and they are vulnerable to acid and alkaline. Thus, perfumes should be avoided in areas where pearls are being worn.
